The Villa Doria Pamphili: it is a park

Villa Doria Pamphili is Rome’s largest public park, in Monteverde in the west. About 184 hectares of grounds, of which roughly 94 hectares are open to the public. It is free and open daily from 7:00 to sunset. There is a Casino del Bel Respiro inside the park that is used for Italian government functions and is not open to visitors. The park is worth visiting if you want a long walk with Romans, or you have an afternoon and want green space.

The Galleria Doria Pamphilj: it is a picture collection

The Galleria is a private art collection inside Palazzo Doria Pamphilj at Via del Corso 305 in the city centre. Four gilded wings run in a cross around an internal courtyard, and they hold more than four hundred works hung floor to ceiling in the dense style of a private collection rather than a museum. The palace is still the residence of the Doria Pamphilj family. It costs €16 at the door, €17 booked direct online, and children under 12 enter free. It is closed every Wednesday.

How to tell which one you want

Ask yourself: do I want a walk in nature or a museum? If it is nature and it is hot, the Villa is the answer. If it is paintings and Renaissance art, the Galleria on Via del Corso is what you want. Check the cost page if you are unsure about what the €16 includes.

The spelling difference

I usually see the park written as "Pamphili" and the gallery as "Pamphilj" with the final j, and people do use those spellings as a quick test. But both versions appear for both places, so it is not a reliable test — the difference between a park and a palazzo is the better way to sort them out.
