The every-Wednesday closure

A widely copied error says the gallery closes on the third Wednesday of the month. It does not. It is closed every Wednesday, no exceptions. Plan your Rome itinerary around that.

Why Monday is actually useful

The Galleria Borghese, Rome’s other great small collection, is closed on Mondays. The Doria Pamphilj is open. If your Rome trip has a Monday hole, this is exactly where it fills.

Entry slots

Entries release every 30 minutes all day. So if you arrive at 11:15 and the 11:00 and 11:30 slots are full, the next available is 12:00. The slot is not a tour start time or a crowding limit — it just means you enter the gallery at that time and move through at your own pace. A 30-minute slot does not mean 30 minutes in the gallery. Most visitors spend 1–3 hours here.

Closure days

In addition to every Wednesday, the gallery is closed 1 January, Easter Sunday and 25 December. It is open every other public holiday in Rome.

Not free on the first Sunday

The Italian initiative #domenicalmuseo offers free entry to state museums on the first Sunday of the month. This gallery is private property and charges every day it opens. There is no free Sunday here.

Frequently asked questions

When is Palazzo Doria Pamphilj open?

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9:00–19:00; Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10:00–20:00. Closed every Wednesday. Last entry one hour before closing.

Is it ever closed on a Wednesday?

No. Every Wednesday it is closed, no exceptions. A widely copied error says the third Wednesday — ignore that.

What day should I visit?

Any day except Wednesday. If your Rome schedule has a Monday hole, this is useful — the Galleria Borghese is closed Mondays but this is open. If it is hot, avoid the midday crowd and come just after opening or in late afternoon.

Is it free on the first Sunday?

No. The #domenicalmuseo scheme covers Italian state museums only. This is a private collection and charges every day it opens.

What time can I enter?

Entries release every 30 minutes all day. If you arrive at 11:45, the next available slot is probably 12:00 or 12:30. It is not a tour start or a crowding limit — you enter then move through at your own pace.
